The Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia 2016 – A luminous and transparent appearance with fresh aromas of passion fruit, citrus and green apple. The wine is very focused on this classic vintage with upfront acidity and pretty mineral notes.

The Ornellaia story is one of vision and determination. Established in 1981, Ornellaia immediately went on a quest for excellence.

Ornellaia has always been an expression of the close bond between humans and nature. From the launch of Ornellaia in 1985 to the beautiful Bellaria vineyards, from the debut of Italy’s first ever second vin, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia, to the Vendemmia d’Artista project and the creation of Ornellaia Bianco, the story of Ornellaia is fast paced as well as being a source of pride and inspiration.

Owned by the Frescobaldi family, many men and women have defined the Ornellaia story. Some are no longer with us, while many others are essential parts of Ornellaia’s current incarnation and working towards its future. Marchese Ferdinando Frescobaldi is President of Ornellaia alongside Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja, CEO since 1999.

Sauvignon Blanc

Zesty, fragrant sauvignon blanc is probably the most popular white wine variety in the world right now. But while tropical-fruit tinged New Zealand sauvignon style graces every wine list in the country, it’s worth discovering that there’s much more to this aromatic grape variety than Marlborough.

In its homeland of the Loire Valley, France, sauvignon blanc showcases its aromatic character and refreshing acidity at its best in the form of pure, zesty wines.

The other key region in France for top-quality sauvignon blanc is Bordeaux. It is here that the variety finds itself in bed with its most frequent blending partner, semillon, creating arguably the world’s finest sweet wines in the form of Sauternes and Barsac, along with good quantities of dry, fresh, white wines.

The Country

Italian wine, with its rich diversity and quality, is a reflection of the country’s deep-rooted wine culture and the varied terroirs that span from the Alpine slopes in the north to the sun-drenched islands in the south. Italy is renowned for being the world’s largest wine producer, offering an array of wines that are as diverse as its cuisine. From the robust and age-worthy Barolo and Barbaresco wines of Piedmont to the light and zesty Pinot Grigio of the Veneto region, Italian wines are made to complement a wide range of foods and occasions. The country’s winemaking history dates back thousands of years, influenced by ancient civilizations such as the Etruscans and Romans, and continues to evolve today. Each region boasts its own indigenous grape varieties, with over 350 officially recognized by the Italian government, contributing to the unique character and flavor profiles of Italian wines. Whether it’s a Chianti Classico enjoyed with pasta in a Tuscan villa or a crisp Prosecco toasting a special moment, Italian wines encapsulate the essence of la dolce vita—the sweet life

The Region

Tuscany, the heart of Italian winemaking, boasts a rich history and diverse range of wines with styles such as

  • Chianti: A classic red blend from Tuscany, Chianti is primarily made with at least 70% Sangiovese grapes. It ranges from light to full-bodied, offering red cherry fruit, herbal nuances, and earthy notes.
  • Brunello di Montalcino: Produced around the town of Montalcino, this red wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. Initially juicy and spicy, it develops strong aromas of cherry and leather over time.
  • Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: Produced around Montepulciano, this prized wine features Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) as the main grape. Young versions display ripe red fruit, while aged ones develop robust flavors of tar, smoke, and leather.
