The Alsace Riesling Thalburg 2015 – An excellent wine from 30-40 year old vines lower down the hillside of Altenberg de Bergbieten and facing west. Fragments of gypsum can be clearly seen here weathered out on the surface. The wine has the same pitch and flavours as the Glintzberg, but the older vines give a juice that is just a little denser with a touch more structure.
The Alsace Riesling Thalburg 2015 hails from the Alsace region in France. This picturesque region is renowned for its exceptional white wines, particularly Riesling, which thrives in its unique terroir. The Alsace Riesling Thalburg 2015 is crafted with meticulous care. The grapes are harvested from well-established vines in the Thalburg vineyard, known for its optimal terroir that imparts a unique mineral character to the wine. After harvesting, the grapes undergo careful selection and fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve their fresh and vibrant qualities.
Aging is a crucial part of the process for this Riesling. The wine is aged in neutral oak barrels for about 12 months, allowing it to develop complexity and depth without imparting any oak flavors. This aging process enhances the wine’s natural acidity and balances its flavors, resulting in a wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to further mature
The village of Bergbieten in the extreme north of Alsace, 25km west of Strasbourg, has only one single producer, the Schmitt family, who have been making wine from 10ha of vineyards since the early 17th century.
The domaine is now run by brothers Julien and Bruno, in their early forties, with mother Anne-Marie officially retired but still helping out whenever she can. The estate is named after Julien and Bruno’s father who tragically died in a car accident back in 1993. When Julien joined the domaine in 1999 he converted the domaine to organic viticulture, the harvest is manual and they work with natural yeasts for the fermentation.
The two village wines that we buy, Glintzberg and Thalberg (two lieu-dits that lie right next to the grand cru of Altenberg de Bergbieten), are more accessible in their youth than many wines from the region. One of the factors that explain this is that they work with low, though perfectly safe levels of sulphur, which all too often can act as a barrier against the enjoyment of young village wines from Alsace.
Riesling
Riesling is a white grape variety which originated in Germany and now has plantings in many other countries including Alsace, New Zealand and Australia. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying clean fruit and floral aromas, with green apple, and layered citrus flavours. It can make great varietally pure wines across the spectrum, from steely bone-dry examples to unctuous, sweet dessert wines. Its high acidity allows some examples to be extensively aged, where they can develop great complexity.
