Production:

  • Harvesting: The journey of Santa Tresa Frappato Rina Russa begins in the picturesque vineyards of Vittoria, Sicily. Here, the Frappato grapes are meticulously handpicked towards the end of September. Each grape is carefully placed in small 15kg containers to ensure they remain in pristine condition, preserving their delicate flavours and aromas.
  • Vinification: Once harvested, the grapes are chilled overnight to a temperature of 6-8°C. This crucial step helps to lock in the freshness and vibrant characteristics of the Frappato grape. The grapes then undergo gentle destemming and crushing, a process that is handled with utmost care to avoid damaging the fruit. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 18-22°C over a period of 10-12 days. This slow and steady fermentation allows the wine to develop its unique profile.
  • Malolactic Fermentation: After the primary fermentation, the wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation. This secondary fermentation process is essential for softening the wine and enhancing its complexity. It transforms the sharp malic acid into smoother lactic acid, giving the wine a rounder, more refined taste.

Aging:

  • Lees Aging: Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees for about 4-6 months in stainless steel tanks. The lees, which are the residual yeast cells and other particles, are regularly stirred to impart additional depth and texture to the wine. This lees aging process contributes to the wine’s rich mouthfeel and complexity.
  • Bottling: Once the aging process is complete, the wine is carefully bottled. This final step captures the essence of Santa Tresa Frappato Rina Russa, preserving its fresh and vibrant character for wine lovers to enjoy.

Tasting Notes:

  • Appearance: As you pour the wine into your glass, you’re greeted by its beautiful light cherry colour. This visually appealing hue hints at the wine’s fresh and lively nature, inviting you to explore further.
  • Bouquet: Bringing the glass to your nose, you are enveloped by the fresh aroma of wild strawberries. This aromatic profile is both nostalgic and invigorating, reminiscent of a sunlit strawberry field. The bouquet is a testament to the wine’s fruit-forward nature, promising a delightful tasting experience.
  • Palate: On the palate, Santa Tresa Frappato Rina Russa is beautifully balanced. The silky smooth fruit flavors glide effortlessly over your taste buds, offering a refreshing burst that lingers pleasantly. The wine’s vibrant fruitiness is complemented by a real freshness that runs through it, making each sip a joy. The surprisingly long finish leaves a lasting impression of its elegant and refined character.
  • Pairing: This versatile wine pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes. Traditionally, it is enjoyed with fish, particularly dishes typical of Ragusa such as tuna, swordfish, and blue fish. It also complements cured meats and cheeses beautifully. For optimal enjoyment, serve it at room temperature (18-20°C) or slightly chilled (14-16°C) when paired with fish.

Overall: Santa Tresa Frappato Rina Russa stands out for its extraordinary fruitiness and unique style. It is a red wine in a class of its own, offering a fresh and vibrant tasting experience that is perfect for various occasions. Whether you’re enjoying it with a meal or on its own, this wine invites you to savor each moment and appreciate the craftsmanship behind it.

Frappato

Frappato is a light-bodied, red wine grape variety that is a staple in Sicilian viticulture, particularly in the arid landscapes of the island’s southeastern regions.

It is celebrated for producing wines that are cherry-colored and aromatic, with a delightful freshness reminiscent of a fine Beaujolais. The grape is a key component, along with Nero d’Avola, in Sicily’s only DOCG wine, Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Frappato’s wines are known for being low in tannins, making them approachable and easy to enjoy.

The grape has a storied history, with some records indicating its presence since the 17th century. Recent DNA analysis suggests that Frappato shares genetic similarities with Sangiovese, hinting at a noble lineage.
