Ledda Vermentino di Gallura Superiore DOCG Soliànu 2021

Hailing from the wind-swept northern tip of Sardinia, this is not your typical light Italian white. The Soliànu is a benchmark example of the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG—the only DOCG (the highest classification in Italian wine) in Sardinia. Grown on ancient, weathered granite soils that sparkle in the Mediterranean sun, the vines here struggle for survival. This struggle creates magic: low yields of incredibly concentrated grapes that absorb the minerality of the rock and the salinity of the nearby sea. Produced by the Ledda family, who blend traditional passion with modern precision, this wine is a liquid tribute to the wild beauty of the Gallura landscape.

If you believe white wine should be light and simple, the Soliànu 2021 is here to change your mind. Hailing from the windswept granite peaks of Gallura—Sardinia’s only DOCG appellation—this is a white wine with the soul of a red. It is unctuous, powerful, and profoundly mineral.

At the Penventon Tasting Room, we champion wines that tell a story of their soil. The Soliànu does exactly that. Grown on weathered granite rock where vines struggle to survive, every drop captures the savage beauty of the Mediterranean scrub. It is not just a drink; it is a sensory trip to the island’s sun-baked coast.

In The Glass: Tasting Notes

  • The Look: Pours a luminous, deep straw yellow with distinct golden reflections that hint at its “Superiore” richness.

  • The Nose: A complex, evolving bouquet. It opens with an intense wave of ripe, exotic fruits—specifically lychee, tinned peach, and tangerine zest. As it breathes, the signature Gallura aromatics emerge: wild rosemary, lemon thyme, and the scent of sun-warmed wet stone.

  • The Palate: This is where the magic happens. The texture is oily and velvety, coating the mouth with a weight reminiscent of a fine Burgundy. The tropical fruit is present but restrained by a razor-sharp, saline acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, leaving a mouth-watering salty kick and a pleasant almond bitterness that is the hallmark of true Vermentino.

The creation of the Ledda Vermentino di Gallura Superiore begins in the vineyard, not the cellar. In the granite-rich soils of the Matteu district, the Ledda family practices a rigorous “Green Harvest,” deliberately reducing the number of grape bunches on each vine. This sacrifice forces the plant to channel all its energy into the few remaining berries, resulting in fruit of exceptional concentration and aromatic intensity.

Harvest & Vinification Harvest is strictly manual, taking place in the cool, early hours of the morning to protect the delicate aromatics from the Sardinian heat. The grapes undergo a meticulous selection process—only the healthiest bunches make the cut. Once in the winery, the fruit is de-stemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place exclusively in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Unlike many rich whites that rely on oak barrels for body, the Soliànu achieves its weight through the quality of the fruit alone, preserving the razor-sharp freshness that defines the Gallura terroir.

The “Superiore” Aging Process The secret to the Soliànu’s luxurious, oily texture lies in its aging on the fine lees (sur lie). After fermentation, the wine is left to rest in contact with the spent yeast cells for several months. This technique naturally softens the acidity and adds a creamy, savory mouthfeel (often described as “unctuous”) without imparting the vanilla or spice flavours associated with wood. The wine is then bottle-aged for an additional period before release, allowing the complex tropical and mineral notes to harmonize perfectly.

  • Harvest: 100% Hand-picked (Manual)

  • Vessel: Stainless Steel only (No Oak)

  • Technique: Extended aging on fine lees (Sur Lie) for texture

  • Filtration: Minimal, to preserve structure

  • Philosophy: Low intervention to highlight the granite soil minerality

Vermentino

Vermentino is a light-skinned white wine grape variety primarily grown in Italy, particularly in Sardinia and Liguria, as well as in Corsica and parts of southern France. The grape is known for producing wines with a fresh and aromatic profile, often featuring flavors of lime, grapefruit, green apple, and almond.

Vermentino wines are typically dry, with a medium-light body and medium-high acidity, making them refreshing and versatile. They can be made in both oaked and unoaked styles, with the oaked versions offering a richer, fuller taste. The grape is also used in blends, particularly in Provence Rosé, where it is known as Rolle

The Soliànu has firmly established itself as a benchmark for high-end Gallura whites, earning repeated praise from the world’s most respected wine critics. The label is a frequent high-scorer in Vinitaly’s ‘5StarWines’ guide (consistently scoring 90+ points), a testament to its technical perfection and expressive character.

Internationally, it has been recognized by the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge, where judges have praised its “lovely purity of youthful stone fruit” and “elegant, aromatic herbs.” It has also garnered attention from Wine Enthusiast, which has highlighted its “bright linear palate” and complex saline finish. These accolades confirm what the palate already knows: this is a world-class white wine that competes with the best of the Mediterranean.
