Villa Blanche Piquepoul Noir

Well you have probably tried the highly popular white Piquepoul but this is the far less common red wine version. 100% Piquepoul noir.

Piquepoul Noir is an original Languedoc grape variety. Garnet red with spicy aromas of redcurrant pomegranate. Its red fruit and citrus notes are combined with fine tannins.

Our first vintage of Piquepoul Noir has distinctive character and deliciously easy to drink is part of the Villa Blanche Cépages Anciens range, which showcases Languedoc’s wine heritage.

The grapes are destemmed and sorted before being fermented at around 25°C, with 10 minutes pumping over per day. The cap is moistened every day at the end of maceration. Vatting last 10 days, with malolactic fermentation after cold settling in cement tanks.

Domaine Calmel and Joseph is a former farmstead, typical of the Languedoc, first mentioned in a deed of property dated the 26 July 1577 belonging to the nobleman Jehan de Calmès, Lord of Saint Jullia. In the course of its history it was known by several different names, including Borde Neuve and La Madone

Piquepoul Noir

Picpoul Noir (or Piquepoul Noir) is a rare black-skinned variant of green-skinned Picpoul Blanc, the variety best known in its Picpoul de Pinet guise. Only a tiny number of Picpoul Noir vines remain, and almost all of them are located in southern France, in the southern end of the Rhone Valley and in patches of eastern Languedoc. A handful of the vines are also found growing in Spain, where the variety is known as Picapoll Negro.

The Country

French wine, steeped in history and tradition, offers a rich tapestry of flavors and styles. Bordeaux’s iconic red blends—Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—create wines with structured tannins and notes of blackcurrant, plum, and cedar. Burgundy’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay yield velvety reds and crisp whites. Champagne sparkles with toasty brioche and citrus. The Rhône Valley boasts bold Syrah, while Alsace’s Riesling and Gewürztraminer express floral aromas. From Provence’s pale rosés to Corsica’s sun-kissed Vermentino, each bottle tells a story. Santé!

The Region

Pays d’Oc wine region captures the zeitgeist of the current wine scene. Celebrating its thirty-year conquest, it lies at the core of France’s oldest wine region, founded in the 6th century BC. Pays d’Oc is best known for varietal wines, accounting for 92% of all French varietal wine.
