The Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** Gold Kap 2015 is entirely based on healthy, botrytis-free grapes and opens with intensely herbal flavors in the first moments before very fine Riesling, slate and lemon aromas take over. This Auslese is intense, rich and round, perfectly ripe and concentrated but also super precise, highly elegant and finessed. The finish is super fine, endlessly salty and stimulatingly piquant. This is a mouth-watering sweet Riesling with great tension and finesse!”

Although a sweet wine, this wine is so well balanced that it can be paired with rich savoury dishes, as well as dessert dishes.

Stephan Reinhardt – The Wine Advocate:
Due to the drought and heat, 2015 was an easy vintage in terms of plant protection. The summer was very dry and the vegetative growing of the plants was pretty moderate. Also, there was no pressure from any fungal diseases. It was crucial, though, to keep yields low and to have a sufficient layer of humus to protect the soils from drought stress. Also, to receive fully ripe and aromatic grapes, it was necessary to harvest as late as possible.

“When the rain came in the beginning and in the end of September, many colleagues panicked because they feared another quick spreading of rot like in 2014,” says Markus Molitor. “But in fact, we got a really perfect October! It was necessary to extend the hang time because the grapes needed some time to metabolize the biochemical processes caused by the September rain.”

Markus Molitor started with some pre-selection in early September when the first nests of botrytis were also cut away. The main Riesling harvest did not start before the middle of October and wasn’t finished before the middle of November. Several top producers tend to harvest sooner today to keep the acidity fresh and to avoid too big and fat wines, but that is not Markus Molitor’s strategy. A too early harvest might cause an atypical early aging of the wines, and they often get some bitter flavours, too, he says.

“However, in 2015 there was no problem with acidity at all; the acidity was ripe but remained high even in October when we got perfectly ripe and intensely flavoured grapes,” Molitor says. “Since there was no rain forecasted, we could go wherever we wanted and pick whatever we wanted. There was so much time to sort and to select! In fact, we picked our grapes at roughly 100° Oechsle and with phantasmagorical acidity levels!” (No malolactic fermentation in 2015.)

Riesling

Riesling is a white grape variety which originated in Germany and now has plantings in many other countries including Alsace, New Zealand and Australia. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying clean fruit and floral aromas, with green apple, and layered citrus flavours. It can make great varietally pure wines across the spectrum, from steely bone-dry examples to unctuous, sweet dessert wines. Its high acidity allows some examples to be extensively aged, where they can develop great complexity.

The Country

German wines are a symphony of flavors and history, offering a unique blend of tradition and innovation. Nestled along the picturesque river valleys of the Rhine and Moselle, Germany’s vineyards produce some of the world’s most elegant and aromatic wines. The star of the show is undoubtedly Riesling, celebrated for its versatility and ability to express the terroir with notes ranging from crisp green apple to luscious honeyed apricot. However, the rise of Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) has added a new dimension, bringing rich, velvety reds to the forefront.

German wines are not just about taste; they are a journey through centuries of winemaking excellence, where each bottle tells a story of the land, the climate, and the passionate vintners who craft these exquisite beverages. Whether you prefer a dry, mineral-driven white or a sweet, dessert-like nectar, German wines offer a delightful experience for every palate.

The Region

The Mosel wine region, nestled along the winding Mosel River in western Germany, is renowned for its steep vineyards, picturesque villages, and world-class Riesling wines. This region, which takes its name from the Mosel River, is one of Germany’s thirteen quality wine regions and is particularly famous for its Riesling grape variety. The vineyards here are some of the steepest in the world, with the Calmont vineyard in Bremm being the steepest at a 65-degree incline.

The Mosel’s unique climate and soil contribute significantly to the quality of its wines. The region’s cooler northern continental climate, combined with its slate-rich soils, helps produce wines that are light, crisp, and high in acidity. These conditions are ideal for the Riesling grape, which thrives here, producing wines with floral, peach, and citrus aromas, along with a distinctive minerality
