Twin Fin Pineapple and Pink Grapefruit Rum
Twin Fin Pineapple and Pink Grapefruit Rum tastes like a vibrant slice of sunshine, perfectly balancing the lush, velvety sweetness of tropical fruit with a crisp, zesty grapefruit kick
The “Golden Hour” Experience
Picture yourself at the end of a long, hot day, just as the sun is starting to dip. You pour this rum over a mountain of ice, and the first thing that hits you isn’t the alcohol—it’s a wave of nostalgia for holidays you haven’t taken yet. Bringing the glass to your nose feels like cutting into a ripe, golden pineapple right on the beach.
When you take that first sip, it catches you off guard; you expect a sugar rush, but instead, you get this zesty, electric jolt of pink grapefruit. It’s crisp and clean, washing over your palate like a cool Atlantic breeze. It doesn’t just taste tropical; it feels like the exact moment your shoulders drop and you finally relax.
The Skeptic’s Surprise
If you are someone who usually shies away from flavoured rums because they taste like “candy,” this bottle changes the narrative. It respects the spirit. You can taste the quality of the Caribbean rum base—that familiar, warming molasses hum—but it’s dressed up in a bright, citrus coat. The pineapple provides a velvety texture that coats the mouth, but just as it threatens to become too sweet, the grapefruit snaps it back with a dry, pithy bitterness. It’s a grown-up flavour profile: playful but sophisticated, leaving your mouth watering rather than sticky.
The “Perfect Serve” Sensation
Mixing this with lemonade or tonic transforms it into something entirely different. The carbonation lifts the citrus oils, making the scent fill the room. Drinking it feels effortless, dangerous even, because the harshness of the alcohol is completely masked by that juicy fruit punch character. It tastes like sunshine in a glass—bright, yellow, and vibrant. There is a lingering spice on the finish, a subtle warmth that reminds you this is a proper Cornish-blended spirit, grounded and bold, even while it dances with tropical fruit notes.
A Tale of Two Coasts: The History of Twin Fin Rum
Twin Fin Rum is a relatively young spirit with a distinct “Coast to Coast” philosophy, born from a desire to bridge the tropical warmth of the Caribbean with the rugged, wild nature of the Cornish coast.
1. The Founder & The Distillery
The brand was created by Southwestern Distillery, an independent, family-run distillery located near Padstow in North Cornwall. It was founded in 2012 by Tarquin Leadbetter, a self-taught master distiller who first gained fame for creating “Tarquin’s Gin.” After establishing himself in the gin world, Leadbetter turned his attention to rum, spending two years experimenting with blends and spices before launching the Twin Fin brand around May 2020.
2. The Name & Inspiration
The name “Twin Fin” is a nod to the classic surfboard design (a board with two fins) popular in the 1970s and a staple of beach culture. It reflects the brand’s laid-back, surfer ethos. The rum is designed to be the ultimate “beach spirit”—something you can drink on the sand after a surf or swim.
3. The “Coast to Coast” Process
Unlike traditional rums that are fully produced in one location, Twin Fin is a hybrid:
Born in the Caribbean: The base spirit is a blend of pot-still rum from Jamaica and column-still rum from the Dominican Republic.
Crafted in Cornwall: This Caribbean base is shipped to Cornwall, where it is infused with fruits and spices in a flame-fired copper pot still (named “Tressa”).
The Flavour: The Pineapple and Pink Grapefruit expression is part of the brand’s “progressive” expansion. While the original Golden Spiced Rum focuses on vanilla and orange, this specific variation was introduced later (circa 2021/2022) to cater to a growing demand for lighter, fruit-forward “tiki-style” rums without the heavy, artificial sugar often found in competitors.
4. No Added Sugar Philosophy
A key part of the Twin Fin history is their rebellion against the “sugary spiced rum” stereotype. Leadbetter insisted on using no artificial sugars or syrups for the flavouring. The sweetness in the Pineapple and Pink Grapefruit edition comes primarily from the fruit distillates and the natural sweetness of the Caribbean rum base, rather than added additives.

Twin Fin Rum is a modern, progressive rum brand produced by Southwestern Distillery, an independent, family-run distillery located on the wild coast of North Cornwall near Padstow. Launched in May 2020, the brand was created by Tarquin Leadbetter, the self-taught master distiller best known for founding the award-winning Tarquin’s Gin.
While Southwestern Distillery made its name in the gin world, Twin Fin represents Leadbetter’s ambitious entry into the rum category. The brand was born from a desire to create a “beach rum” that moved away from the heavy, pirate-themed tropes of traditional spiced rums, instead embracing a lighter, brighter, and more contemporary identity inspired by surf culture.
The “Coast to Coast” Philosophy
The defining characteristic of Twin Fin is its “Coast to Coast” philosophy. The brand positions itself as a bridge between two distinct cultures: the tropical warmth of the Caribbean and the rugged, elemental nature of Cornwall.
