The story of Tarquin Twin Fin Spiced Rum begins with the runaway success of Southwestern Distillery, founded in 2012 by the classically trained chef and self-taught distiller, Tarquin Leadbetter. From his small, independent distillery perched on the wild cliffs of the North Cornish coast, Tarquin first gained international acclaim for his artisanal Tarquin’s Cornish Gin. Inspired by his surroundings and a passion for flavour, he built a reputation for crafting exceptional, small-batch spirits. After conquering the gin world, Tarquin turned his attention to his next great love: rum.
Launched in the summer of 2021, Twin Fin was born from this same spirit of adventure and flavour exploration. The name itself is a nod to a type of surfboard, perfectly capturing the brand’s coastal, laid-back, and sun-soaked identity. The concept was to create a “rum for gin lovers”—a spiced rum that was lighter, more aromatic, and less sweet than traditional offerings.
The creation process is a unique fusion of two distinct worlds. A blend of aged Jamaican pot-still rum, known for its rich and funky character, and lighter Dominican Republic column-still rum is first imported from the Caribbean. This “twin-country” blend is then brought back to the Cornish coast, where it is infused with Tarquin’s carefully selected spices and finished with a touch of Pedro Ximénez sherry before being bottled, creating a unique spirit that is born in the Caribbean but truly raised in Cornwall.

Twin Fin Rum is a modern, progressive rum brand produced by Southwestern Distillery, an independent, family-run distillery located on the wild coast of North Cornwall near Padstow. Launched in May 2020, the brand was created by Tarquin Leadbetter, the self-taught master distiller best known for founding the award-winning Tarquin’s Gin.
While Southwestern Distillery made its name in the gin world, Twin Fin represents Leadbetter’s ambitious entry into the rum category. The brand was born from a desire to create a “beach rum” that moved away from the heavy, pirate-themed tropes of traditional spiced rums, instead embracing a lighter, brighter, and more contemporary identity inspired by surf culture.
