Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Year Old Rum

A is widely regarded as a benchmark for super-premium rum, celebrated for its profound complexity and exceptional smoothness. Its extraordinary character is born from a unique combination of high-altitude ageing and a dynamic maturation process. The result is a spirit that offers a luxurious and multi-layered tasting experience, appealing to both seasoned rum aficionados and those new to sipping spirits.

An Overture of Complex Aromas
Before the first sip, Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Year Old Rum captivates the senses with a deep and intricate bouquet. The initial aroma is a rich wave of sweet caramel, honeyed butterscotch, and warm vanilla, a direct legacy of its time in American whiskey barrels. This is beautifully interwoven with layers of dried fruit, particularly apricot and raisins, imparted by the Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks used in its ‘Sistema Solera’ ageing.

As the rum opens up in the glass, more subtle notes emerge: toasted nuts, marzipan, a hint of orange peel, and the decadent scent of cacao and coffee, all underpinned by a gentle, spicy oakiness that promises depth and sophistication.

The Palate: A Symphony of Sweetness and Spice
Upon tasting, the rum reveals a wonderfully viscous, full-bodied texture that coats the palate in a velvety embrace. The flavour is exceptionally generous and complex, starting with a pronounced sweetness of molasses and virgin sugar cane honey. This sweetness, however, is impeccably balanced, never becoming cloying. The initial notes of caramel and vanilla from the nose translate perfectly, evolving into a rich tapestry of flavours that include dark chocolate, caramelized nuts, and succulent dried fruits.

The influence of the different casks becomes even more apparent here, with savoury notes of leather, tobacco, and warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg adding a sophisticated counterpoint to the sweetness.

A Long, Elegant, and Memorable Finish
The finish of Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Year Old Rum is as remarkable as its opening. It is incredibly long, smooth, and intricate, leaving a lasting impression of honeyed butterscotch and spiced oak. The sweeter elements gracefully recede, allowing the more complex notes of dried fruit and a whisper of ginger to linger on the palate. There is virtually no alcoholic burn, just a gentle, satisfying warmth that fades slowly. It’s an elegant and noble conclusion that is both attractive and evocative, inviting contemplation and ensuring that each sip is a memorable experience.

The history of Ron Zacapa is a story of unique terroir, pioneering spirit, and masterful blending, deeply rooted in the landscape of Guatemala. The brand was established in 1976 in the eastern Guatemalan town of Zacapa to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the town’s founding. From its inception, Zacapa was destined to be different from other rums, a vision driven by the desire to create a spirit of exceptional quality and complexity.

Two key factors define Ron Zacapa’s unique place in the rum world. The first is its base ingredient. Unlike the vast majority of rums which are distilled from molasses (a byproduct of sugar production), Zacapa is crafted from the first pressing of virgin sugar cane, known as “miel de caña” or virgin sugar cane honey. This provides a sweeter, smoother, and more floral foundation for the rum, distinguishing its flavour profile from the very beginning.

The second, and perhaps most famous, element of its history is its unique ageing process. The rums are transported to the highlands of Quetzaltenango to mature in a facility nicknamed the “House Above the Clouds,” situated 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) above sea level. This high-altitude, cool-climate maturation slows down the ageing process, allowing the rum to develop a remarkable depth and complexity.

This process is overseen by Master Blender Lorena Vásquez, one of the few female master blenders in the spirits industry, who has been the creative force behind the brand’s character since the 1980s. She perfected the brand’s signature ‘Sistema Solera’ for Ron Zacapa 23. This is a dynamic and complex ageing method adapted from the Spanish sherry tradition.

The rum is not aged for a straight 23 years; rather, it is a blend of rums with different ages, from 6 to 23 years old, that have passed through a series of casks. These casks previously held American whiskies, Oloroso sherry, and finally, Pedro Ximénez sherry. This intricate journey from cask to cask imparts a rich tapestry of flavours, resulting in the iconic smoothness and complexity that has made Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 a globally celebrated super-premium rum.

What makes Ron Zacapa unique?

  • Dynamic ‘Sistema Solera’ Ageing: The rum is a blend of different ages (from 6 to 23 years in the flagship bottling) matured in a series of casks that previously held American whiskies and fine sherries, adding layers of flavour.
  • A Luxurious Taste: Famous for its deep, rich profile with notes of honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak, and sherry-soaked fruit, leading to an incredibly smooth and long finish.
  • Artisanal Heritage: Each bottle is adorned with a hand-woven ‘petate’ band, a tribute to Guatemala’s Mayan heritage and the craft behind the spirit.
