J2O Apple and Raspberry pours a glowing ruby-pink, somewhere between a rosé and a summer berry cordial, and it looks every bit as inviting as anything else on the bar. The aroma arrives first as ripe raspberry, soft and jammy with a faint floral edge, followed by the cleaner, greener scent of freshly pressed apple. It smells like a bowl of orchard fruit with a handful of berries scattered on top, and it sets up J2O Apple and Raspberry as a fruit drink with a little more character than a standard juice.

On the palate, apple leads. It forms the body of the drink, bringing a crisp, rounded sweetness and a gentle orchard freshness that keeps every sip light and easy. J2O Apple and Raspberry is a still drink, with no bubbles to lift or distract, so the texture is smooth and slightly fuller than water, almost silky, thanks to the natural pectin from the fruit that gives it a soft, juicy weight on the tongue.

The raspberry is what gives the drink its personality. It brings a bright, tangy berry note that cuts through the apple’s sweetness, with that characteristic balance of sweet and sharp that makes raspberries so moreish. The two fruits work well together: the apple provides the smooth, mellow base, while the raspberry adds colour, aroma and a lively tartness that stops J2O Apple and Raspberry from ever tasting flat or cloying. The overall sweetness is moderate, and the drink is low in calories, so it refreshes rather than weighs you down.

The finish is clean and fresh, with a last trace of raspberry lingering after the apple fades. J2O Apple and Raspberry is best served well chilled, shaken gently before pouring, over ice with a slice of apple or a few fresh raspberries. It’s a natural choice for drivers, non-drinkers and anyone taking a night off, and it works just as well as a mixer: try it over crushed ice with vodka or gin for a long, fruity serve, or topped with a splash of Prosecco.

J2O Apple and Raspberry belongs to a brand that changed how Britain drinks without alcohol. J2O was launched by Britvic in 1998, a project led by Sheraz Dar, with a clear purpose: to give people who were out in pubs, bars and clubs but not drinking alcohol something better than a glass of cola or orange squash. Britvic’s owners now credit that launch with creating the adult soft drinks market in the UK, and J2O’s distinctive glass bottle quickly became a familiar sight on bar back-shelves across the country.

The name itself is a little piece of wordplay. J2O is a pun on H2O, the chemical formula for water, with the J standing for juice, a nod to the fruit juice content that set the drink apart from fizzy soft drinks. The original range launched with Orange and Passion Fruit, Apple and Mango, and Apple and Melon, and the line-up has grown and changed over the years, with seasonal limited editions and the sparkling J2O Spritz range appearing alongside the core flavours.

J2O Apple and Raspberry joined the range in 2005, during a packaging refresh, and it went on to become one of the brand’s three best-known flavours, alongside Orange and Passion Fruit and Apple and Mango. Britvic itself has deep roots, beginning life as the British Vitamin Products Company before taking the Britvic name in 1971, and in 2025 it became part of Carlsberg Britvic. More than twenty-five years after the first bottle, J2O Apple and Raspberry remains a staple of British pubs and hotel bars, including our own here in Cornwall.
