Juan de la Costa Spiced Rum pours a warm golden amber, and the aroma that rises from the glass is soft and inviting rather than fiery. Vanilla leads, sweet and creamy, followed by a gentle drift of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg, with the rich, sugary scent of cane underneath. There is a faint tropical note too, a hint of ripe banana and dried fruit, that reminds you this is a spirit built on Caribbean rum, simply dressed in something warmer.
On the palate, Juan de la Costa Spiced Rum is smooth and easy-going, with a light, rounded body that glides across the tongue. Vanilla and soft caramel arrive first, giving the sip a mellow, toffee-like sweetness, while the cane-sugar character of the base rum adds a clean, slightly brown-sugar richness through the middle. At 35% ABV it is a little gentler than a full-strength rum, so the warmth glows rather than burns, and the sweetness feels comfortable and well judged.
Behind that sweetness, the spice does its quiet work. Cinnamon brings a soft, baking-spice warmth, nutmeg a gentle earthiness, and a light thread of clove and pepper keeps the flavour from becoming simply sweet. The tropical fruit from the nose returns in the background, and together these layers give Juan de la Costa Spiced Rum a cosy, approachable character that suits drinkers who enjoy rum at its softest and most rounded.
The finish is short to medium, warm and gently sweet, with vanilla and cinnamon lingering as the spirit fades. Juan de la Costa Spiced Rum is at its best served well chilled over ice, where the cold softens the spirit further and lets the vanilla and spice come through clearly. It is a relaxed, uncomplicated pour, made for easy sipping at the end of the day.
Rum is one of the oldest spirits of the New World, and its story begins in the Caribbean sugar plantations of the seventeenth century. Planters discovered that molasses, the thick, dark by-product left over from refining sugarcane, could be fermented and distilled into a strong spirit. By the 1650s this new drink was being made across the islands, and within a few decades it had become a staple of colonial trade, carried across the Atlantic and around the world on merchant and naval ships.
Spiced rum grew out of that seafaring world. Sailors, traders and island households had long added spices, fruit and sugar to rum to soften its rough edges, using whatever the spice trade brought into Caribbean ports: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and vanilla. Rum also became closely tied to Britain, most famously through the Royal Navy’s daily rum ration, which lasted from the seventeenth century until “Black Tot Day” in 1970. Commercially bottled spiced rum, however, is a much more modern idea, and its popularity took off in the late twentieth century as drinkers looked for a smoother, sweeter alternative to traditional dark rum.
Juan de la Costa belongs to that modern tradition. The range is produced by Signature Brands and is built around Caribbean rum distilled from cane sugar, with the white and dark expressions described by the producer as coming from the island of St Lucia. Juan de la Costa Spiced Rum takes that same Caribbean base and adds warm spice and vanilla, before it is blended and bottled in Wales. It is a familiar, dependable pour on British bars, offering the soft, sweet, spiced style so many drinkers enjoy, including here at Penventon in Cornwall.
