Disaronno Velvet Cream Liqueur
Offers a luxurious and surprisingly delicate taste experience, a distinct departure from its almond-forward predecessor. The initial impression is one of creamy sweetness, a smooth, almost velvety wave that coats the palate. This isn’t an cloying sweetness, but rather a soft, inviting note that acts as a plush backdrop for the more nuanced flavours to emerge. Imagine the gentle sweetness of vanilla ice cream, but with a richer, more sophisticated depth.
As the initial creaminess settles, the signature Disaronno almond essence gently unfurls, yet it’s wonderfully mellowed and integrated, rather than assertive. It’s less of a sharp almond extract and more akin to the subtle, comforting aroma of freshly ground almonds or a marzipan, warmed and softened within the creamy embrace. This nuttiness is beautifully balanced, preventing the liqueur from becoming overly heavy or one-dimensional. Lingering beneath these primary notes is a hint of something akin to caramel or perhaps a very light toffee, adding a whisper of baked richness without ever tipping into overt burnt sugar territory.
The finish is where Disaronno Velvet truly distinguishes itself. It’s remarkably smooth and clean, with no harsh alcohol burn, leaving a lingering warmth and a delicate echo of the almond and cream. Rather than a sticky or cloying aftertaste, it’s a remarkably elegant fade, inviting another sip. The overall impression is one of sophisticated indulgence – a harmonious blend of sweet cream, soft almond, and subtle warmth that makes it a delightful and surprisingly versatile sipper, perfect for dessert or a moment of quiet contemplation.
Disaronno Velvet Cream Liqueur is intrinsically linked to the much older and legendary story of Disaronno Originale. While Velvet is a recent innovation, it draws deeply from a heritage spanning nearly five centuries.
The tale of Disaronno Originale begins in 1525 in Saronno, Italy, amidst the vibrant artistic flourish of the Renaissance. Legend has it that the renowned artist Bernardino Luini, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles in Saronno. To depict the Madonna, he chose a beautiful local innkeeper as his muse. As a gesture of gratitude for being chosen, the innkeeper prepared a special, fragrant, and delicate amber liqueur for the artist. This intimate act of kindness and the unique, handmade blend of secret ingredients are said to be the genesis of what would become Disaronno.
For centuries, this “secret formula” was closely guarded and passed down through generations of the Reina family, who eventually began distilling their own liqueurs. In the early 20th century, a descendant, Domenico Reina, decided to open a workshop in Saronno, commercially producing and marketing the liqueur, then known as “Amaretto di Saronno.” The distinctive square bottle, a work of art crafted by a master glassmaker from Murano, Venice, was introduced in the 1970s, solidifying the brand’s iconic visual identity. In 2001, to distinguish itself and emphasize its unique heritage, the product was officially rebranded as “Disaronno Originale.”
Disaronno Velvet, a significant new chapter in this long history, was introduced in 2020. This marked the first line extension of the iconic Italian brand in nearly 500 years. It represents a masterful evolution, blending the unmistakable character of Disaronno Originale with delightfully unexpected velvety cream notes. The decision to enter the cream liqueur category was timely, aligning with a period of significant growth in the segment. Disaronno Velvet retains the original’s elegant, faceted bottle design and inimitable square cap, but presents them in a sleek, contemporary all-white look, reflecting its smooth, creamy character while paying homage to its rich and storied past.
