Darnleys View Gin

Darnleys View Gin pours crystal clear, and the nose is fresh and lively from the moment it leaves the bottle. Juniper leads, as it should in a proper London Dry, with a clean scent of pine needles that sets out the gin’s classic credentials straight away. Close behind comes the elderflower that defines Darnley’s View, soft and fragrant like hedgerow blossom in early summer, alongside a bright, zesty note of lemon that reads almost like cloudy lemonade. It’s an inviting, floral opening, lighter and more delicate than many juniper-heavy gins, and it tells you this is a gin built around balance rather than brute strength.

On the palate, Darnley’s View Gin opens in the classic London Dry style, with juniper and citrus arriving together. The lemon peel brings a crisp, sunny acidity, and a sharper grapefruit note sits alongside it, keeping the first sip bright and refreshing. The texture is notably smooth and rounded, almost creamy, with very little burn for a 40% ABV spirit, which is exactly what makes Darnley’s View so easy to sip and so versatile behind the bar.

As the citrus fades, the elderflower comes through properly. It adds a gentle, perfumed sweetness and a soft fruitiness that sets Darnley’s View apart from more traditional gins, without ever tasting sweetened or artificial. Underneath, the coriander seed brings a warm, mellow spice with a hint of pepper, while angelica and orris root give the gin its structure, adding an earthy, dry backbone that holds the floral and citrus notes together. With only six botanicals in the recipe, each one has room to be heard, and that clarity is a large part of the gin’s charm.

The finish is long, dry and clean, with juniper lingering alongside a last twist of elderflower and fruit. Darnley’s View Gin makes a superb gin and tonic, ideally served over plenty of ice with a slice of lemon or grapefruit to echo the citrus in the glass, and its floral character also suits classic cocktails such as the Tom Collins, the French 75 and the Aviation, where the elderflower adds a delicate lift.

The name Darnley’s View comes from one of the most famous meetings in Scottish history. In February 1565, Mary, Queen of Scots, was staying at Wemyss Castle, on the Fife coast overlooking the Firth of Forth, when she first caught sight of her cousin Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, through a window onto the castle courtyard. Mary was taken with the tall, handsome young nobleman, and the two were married at Holyrood in Edinburgh that July. The marriage would prove turbulent and short-lived, ending with Darnley’s murder in 1567, but it produced a son, James VI of Scotland, who went on to unite the Scottish and English crowns as James I. Wemyss Castle remains the seat of the Wemyss family to this day, and it is that first glimpse across the courtyard that gives the gin its name.

The Wemyss family have lived and worked in Fife for centuries, and in modern times they built a reputation as wine and spirits merchants, founding Wemyss Malts in Edinburgh to bottle single malt and blended malt Scotch whisky. Darnley’s View was the family’s first step into gin. It was launched in April 2010 at the ProWein trade fair in Düsseldorf, and it quickly made its mark, winning gold in the premium gin category at the Spirits Business Gin Masters in 2011. The recipe was inspired by the elderflower that grows wild around the Wemyss estate, and a spiced sister gin, Darnley’s View Spiced, followed soon after.

For its first seven years, Darnley’s View Gin was distilled under contract in London, at Thames Distillers in Clapham. By then the family had opened its own whisky distillery at Kingsbarns, near St Andrews, in 2014, and in July 2017 they brought gin production home to Fife too, converting a derelict farm cottage beside the whisky distillery into the Darnley’s Gin Distillery. The move came with a fresh look and a shorter name: Darnley’s View became Darnley’s Gin, with the original recipe now known as Darnley’s Original. Many drinkers and bars still know it by its first name, and it remains the same floral, elderflower-led London Dry that first carried the story of Mary and Lord Darnley to bars around the world.
