Connie Glaze Lemon Sherbet Vodka Liqueur

The Nose

Unscrewing the cap releases a scent that is instantly uplifting and undeniably nostalgic. It doesn’t smell like the harsh, medicinal ethanol often associated with vodka; instead, it offers the soft, powdery aroma of classic lemon sherbet sweets. There is a distinct duality to the scent: the bright, zesty oils of wild lemon peel hit you first, followed quickly by the herbal, aromatic green notes of Cornish lemon verbena. It smells fresh and breezy, evoking the scent of a citrus grove after a rainshower rather than a sugary confection.

The Palate

On the tongue, the texture is the first surprise—it is exceptionally velvety and viscous, coating the mouth with a luxurious smoothness. The flavour is a vibrant tug-of-war between sweet and tart. You get an immediate rush of freshly squeezed Sicilian lemon juice, which provides a mouth-watering acidity. This is quickly balanced by the floral sweetness of orange blossom and the sherbet-like “fizz” sensation on the tongue. It tastes authentic and juicy, avoiding the cloying, artificial syrup taste found in cheaper limoncellos.

The Finish

The finish is long, soft, and soothing. As the zesty acidity fades, it leaves behind a lingering taste reminiscent of homemade cloudy lemonade. There is a gentle warmth that reminds you this is a 20% ABV liqueur, but it is incredibly smooth, likely due to the unique sand-filtration process. The final note is a whisper of herbal verbena, leaving the palate feeling cleansed and ready for the next sip.

Connie Glaze is the latest major innovation from Southwestern Distillery, the same Cornish powerhouse behind Tarquin’s Gin and Twin Fin Rum. Launched relatively recently (circa 2023), it represents the distillery’s move into the vodka category, but with a distinct “Cornish twist” that separates it from standard spirits.

Like its sibling brands, Connie Glaze was created by Tarquin Leadbetter, the self-taught master distiller who put modern Cornish spirits on the map. After conquering the gin market and successfully launching a rum brand, Leadbetter turned his attention to vodka. His goal was to create a spirit that was “unbelievably smooth” and deeply connected to the Cornish landscape, moving away from the aggressive burn of mass-produced vodkas.

The name “Connie Glaze” is a playful, affectionate nickname for Constantine Bay, one of Cornwall’s most beautiful golden sand beaches, located just a few miles from the distillery near Padstow.

  • “Connie”: Short for Constantine.

  • “Glaze”: Refers to the smooth, glassy surface of the water or the “glazing” filtration process. The name anchors the brand in a specific place, reinforcing the “beach lifestyle” ethos that defines Southwestern Distillery.

The defining historical and technical feature of Connie Glaze is its filtration method.

  • Camel Estuary Sand: The vodka is slowly filtered through layers of golden sand sourced from the Camel Estuary (where the River Camel flows into the sea).

  • The Science: Sand filtration is an ancient purification technique. By passing the spirit through the sand, impurities are removed, “polishing” the liquid to create an exceptionally creamy and velvety mouthfeel. This process is central to the brand’s identity—”Crafted by the Coast.”

Connie Glaze is the dedicated vodka brand from Southwestern Distillery, the independent, family-run powerhouse in North Cornwall that also produces Tarquin’s Gin and Twin Fin Rum. Launched in late 2023, the brand represents founder Tarquin Leadbetter’s vision of a premium “sipping vodka” that reflects the wild beauty of the Cornish coast.

While many vodkas are marketed on their purity or neutrality, Connie Glaze is built on character and texture. It was created to challenge the perception of vodka as a harsh, tasteless spirit, instead offering a liquid that is exceptionally smooth, creamy, and distinct enough to be drunk neat or over ice.

Connie”: An affectionate local nickname for Constantine Bay, a stunning golden-sand beach located just a few miles from the distillery near Padstow.

“Glaze”: This has a double meaning. In the Cornish language, glaz means “blue,” referring to the colour of the Atlantic ocean. It also nods to the “glazing” or polishing effect of the filtration process, which gives the spirit its glassy smoothness.
