Disaronno Amaretto
Officially known as Disaronno Originale, offers a truly distinctive and immediately recognizable taste profile that has captivated palates for centuries. The dominant characteristic is its pronounced, sweet almond flavour, which is both robust and remarkably smooth. This isn’t a harsh or artificial almond; rather, it evokes the rich, slightly bittersweet essence of marzipan or freshly roasted almonds, a warmth that is both comforting and sophisticated. This primary note is wonderfully balanced by a notable caramelized sweetness, a deep, almost burnt sugar quality that adds complexity and a hint of a delightful sticky warmth without being syrupy.
Beyond the almond and caramel, layers of more subtle flavours emerge. There’s a whisper of vanilla, providing a creamy undertone that softens the almond’s edge and contributes to the liqueur’s velvety texture on the palate. Some might detect faint citrus notes, particularly orange zest, which provides a bright counterpoint to the richness, preventing it from becoming cloying. This delicate fruitiness adds a refreshing lift, enhancing the overall aromatic experience and contributing to its versatility in cocktails.
The mouthfeel of Disaronno Amaretto is remarkably smooth and viscous, coating the tongue with a luxurious warmth that is characteristic of a well-crafted liqueur. Despite its inherent sweetness, it maintains a clean finish, leaving a pleasant, lingering aftertaste of toasted almond and a gentle warmth. There is no sharp alcohol burn, allowing the complex interplay of flavors to shine through beautifully, making it equally enjoyable sipped neat, on the rocks, or as a key ingredient in countless classic and contemporary drinks
The history of Disaronno Amaretto, now officially known as Disaronno Originale, is steeped in a captivating legend that dates back to the Italian Renaissance. Its origins are not merely a matter of commercial production, but rather a romantic tale that intertwines art, gratitude, and a secret recipe passed down through generations.
The legend begins in 1525 in the picturesque town of Saronno, Italy. The celebrated artist Bernardino Luini, a student of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles in the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie. To find the perfect muse for his Madonna, he chose a beautiful young local innkeeper. As a token of her deep gratitude for being chosen, the innkeeper prepared a special, fragrant, and delicate amber liqueur for Luini, using a unique blend of secret ingredients, possibly apricot kernels and various herbs and fruits. This intimate gesture of kindness is considered the very birth of Disaronno.
For centuries following this legendary event, the precise formula for this exquisite liqueur remained a closely guarded secret within the Reina family. They continued to produce it for their private enjoyment and perhaps for a select few. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that Domenico Reina, a descendant of the family, decided to bring this exceptional liqueur to a wider audience. He opened a store and workshop, “Domenico Reina Coloniali,” in the heart of Saronno, where “Amaretto di Saronno” (Amaretto from Saronno) was produced and marketed commercially.
The brand gained significant momentum in the 1970s with the introduction of its distinctive square bottle, a creation of a master glassmaker from Murano, Venice. This iconic design solidified Disaronno’s visual identity, making it instantly recognizable worldwide. To further emphasize its unique heritage and distinguish itself from other amaretto liqueurs, the company formally rebranded the product as “Disaronno Originale” in 2001. Today, produced by Illva Saronno S.p.A., Disaronno Originale stands as the world’s leading amaretto liqueur, a testament to its enduring appeal and a rich history that bridges the gap between legend and global recognition.
