Idle Rock Vodka pours crystal clear, and the nose is fresh and delicate rather than sharp or spirity. Soft grain comes first, clean and faintly bready, followed by a lifted note of citrus peel and a gentle botanical touch that hints at something more considered than a plain neutral spirit. There is none of the hot, solvent-like prickle that can rise from a lesser vodka; instead the aroma is light and inviting, the first sign that Idle Rock Vodka has been made with smoothness as its guiding principle.
On the palate, the texture is the first thing you notice. Idle Rock Vodka is silky and rounded, gliding across the tongue with a soft, almost creamy weight that belies its 40% ABV. A gentle natural sweetness sits at the heart of the sip, more like fresh grain and cereal than sugar, and it gives the vodka a quiet generosity that makes it easy to sip on its own. Where many vodkas aim simply to taste of nothing, Idle Rock aims to taste of something clean, pure and quietly characterful.
Underneath that smoothness, the botanicals used in distillation do subtle but important work. They don’t shout the way they would in a gin; instead they add a faint citrus brightness and a soft herbal lift that give the spirit depth and keep it lively rather than flat. It’s this balance, between exceptional purity and a whisper of character, that makes Idle Rock Vodka the foundation of the whole Idle Rock range, the same smooth Cornish spirit that carries the Raspberry, Summer Citrus and Toffee expressions.
The finish is crisp, clean and refreshing, with a persistent lightness and a last trace of citrus and grain as the spirit fades. Idle Rock Vodka is at its best served ice-cold from the freezer, or over ice with a twist of lemon or lime, where its silky texture really shines. It is equally at home as the backbone of a classic cocktail: a crisp vodka martini, a Moscow Mule with ginger beer and lime, an espresso martini, a Bloody Mary, or simply lengthened with tonic or soda for an easy Cornish highball.
Idle Rock Vodka is made by Saint Sithney Distillery, a young, family-run Cornish producer based on a coastal farmstead at Sithney, just outside Helston and only a short drive from Penventon. The distillery was founded by Greville and Wendy Richards, who brought together Greville’s background in Cornish farming with Wendy’s passion for creative distilling, with Wendy taking on the role of chief distiller. Their first spirit, Saint Sithney Cornish Dry Gin, launched in December 2023, and it soon won a loyal following among Cornish chefs, hotels and bars, along with recognition at the Taste of the West awards.
From there the range grew quickly. Flavoured gins followed, including Summer Fruit, Elderflower and Rhubarb, alongside two alcohol-free botanical spirits, and in 2026 Saint Sithney brought the Cape Cornwall Rum Company into the family, adding rum to its Cornish portfolio. Idle Rock Vodka was the next step: a dedicated premium vodka brand, introduced in June 2026 and built around an exceptionally smooth Cornish base vodka. The original Idle Rock Vodka is the cornerstone of the range, the pure spirit from which flavoured expressions such as Raspberry, Cherry, Summer Citrus, Watermelon, Toffee and Double Espresso are all made, and the distillery has ambitious plans for a new distillery and visitor centre at Sithney to support its growth.
Vodka itself has a long and much-debated history. Poland and Russia both lay claim to its invention, with written records of distilled grain spirits in Eastern Europe dating back to the late Middle Ages, when they were first valued as medicine before becoming a national drink. Vodka reached Western bars in force in the mid-twentieth century, carried by cocktails such as the Moscow Mule and the Screwdriver, and by the 1970s it had become one of the world’s best-selling spirits. In recent years Britain’s craft distilling revival has given vodka a new local character, and Idle Rock Vodka belongs to that movement, bringing a centuries-old spirit to the Cornish coast with a distinctly modern, farmstead approach.

Place and memory are inherently interlinked throughout the cornish landscape. At Sithney, the ancient and the modern meld in the present, creating links to the past and a grounding in place and identity.
Named after Saint Sithney who came to Cornwall as one of a band of Irish missionaries. Legend states that God asked Sithney to be the patron saint of women seeking husbands, but Sithney retorted that he would never get any rest and so instead became the patron saint of mad dogs!
History is entrenched in every aspect of Sithney, even below the ground as the landscape is peppered with mines, some of which go back as far as Tudor times- the most renowned being the Great Wheal Fortune mine. Many generations of Cornishmen toiled in these pits, producing copper, zinc, arsenic, tungsten and tin. It is said that in the 1950s, a lone minor was seen to be working in the burrows, taking two sacks of Wolfram daily to the nearby village of Camborne to sell. And so, the wheel of fortune turns and, like the rotations of the hands of a clock, time has brought a new spirit of creativity and pride to the small parish – Saint Sithney Distilling co.
