Remy Martin VSOP
Remy Martin VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) is the global benchmark for the VSOP category, renowned for its “Fine Champagne” designation, which means it is crafted exclusively from a blend of grapes from the two most prestigious growing regions in Cognac: Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne.
The Taste Profile
On the palate, Rémy Martin VSOP is celebrated for its remarkable smoothness and silkiness. It opens with a bright, dominant note of ripe stone fruits, specifically apricot and baked peach, followed by a floral bouquet of violet and rose. As the cognac sits on the tongue, the influence of Limousin oak barrels emerges, providing a warm foundation of sweet vanilla, toasted almond, and subtle baking spices like ginger and liquorice. The finish is medium-to-long, leaving a lingering, sophisticated trail of dried fruit and a faint hint of hazelnut.
The House of Rémy Martin has a legacy spanning three centuries:
Founded in 1724: It was established by a young winegrower named Rémy Martin. In 1738, King Louis XV was so impressed by the quality of the cognac that he granted the house the rare privilege of planting new vines during a period of famine when new vineyards were strictly forbidden.
The “Fine Champagne” Pioneer: In 1927, André Renaud, the house’s partner and later president, created the first VSOP Fine Champagne. This was a revolutionary move to blend the top two crus (districts) of Cognac to create a superior quality spirit.
The Centaur Emblem: The brand’s famous logo, the Centaur (Sagittarius), was chosen in 1870 by Paul-Émile Rémy Martin, who was an avid astronomer. It represents the union of man and nature, echoing the craftsmanship behind the spirit.
The Iconic Bottle: The frosted green bottle was introduced in 1972 and has since become one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the world of spirits.
