Tokaj
Located in northeastern Hungary, with a small portion extending into Slovakia, the Tokaj wine region is one of the world’s most historic and revered. Boasting a viticultural tradition that may stretch back to Celtic or Roman times, Tokaj was officially demarcated in 1737, making it one of the earliest classified wine regions globally. Its unique terroir, characterized by volcanic soils and a special microclimate at the confluence of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers, is exceptionally conducive to the development of Botrytis cinerea, or “noble rot.”
This benevolent fungus is crucial for producing the region’s legendary sweet wine, Tokaji Aszú, a golden nectar famously dubbed “Wine of Kings, King of Wines” by Louis XIV of France. While Aszú, made primarily from Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Yellow Muscat grapes, remains its most celebrated creation, Tokaj also produces exquisite dry white wines, Szamorodni, and the incredibly rare Eszencia. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural landscape and enduring winemaking traditions, Tokaj continues to enchant wine lovers with its complex, age-worthy, and historically rich offerings.
