Poinsettia Cocktail

The Poinsettia Cocktail engages the senses long before the first sip. As you lift the glass, the garnish of fresh rosemary greets the nose with an herbaceous, piney aroma that instantly evokes winter holidays. This earthy scent creates a fascinating contrast with the liquid below—a vibrant blend of Moët Champagne and rich fruit. The first sip delivers the signature “snap” of the champagne’s bubbles, carrying with it the zesty, citrus oils of Cointreau.

Mid-palate, the drink evolves into a jammy, fruit-forward delight. The strawberry syrup provides a velvety texture and a sweetness that rounds off the natural acidity of the cranberry juice. Unlike a Mimosa which is purely sweet, the Poinsettia maintains a refined dryness thanks to the Moët, leaving the palate cleansed and refreshed. The visual contrast of the deep red liquid against the bright green rosemary makes it a photogenic centrepiece for any celebration.

Origin: Mid-20th Century (approx. 1950s-60s)

The Story: The Poinsettia is widely considered a holiday riff on the classic Champagne Cocktail or Mimosa. While the original Champagne Cocktail dates back to the mid-1800s, the Poinsettia gained popularity in the post-war era when cranberry juice became more commercially available and marketed as a year-round mixer.

The Name: It is named after the Euphorbia pulcherrima plant, which was introduced to the U.S. by Joel Roberts Poinsett (the first U.S. Minister to Mexico) in the 1820s. Just like the plant, the cocktail is defined by its vibrant red body (the cranberry) and green foliage (the rosemary or mint garnish).

Evolution: Originally, it was often just Champagne and cranberry juice. The addition of Cointreau (triple sec) evolved later to bridge the gap between the dry wine and tart juice, essentially making it a “Cranberry Mimosa” with an extra kick.
