Apple Pie Cocktail

The Apple Pie Cocktail opens with an aroma that is instantly comforting, like a warm kitchen on an autumn afternoon. Ripe orchard apple rises first from the glass, followed by the gentle, marzipan-like sweetness of Disaronno and a lift of orange peel from the curaçao. Before the first sip, the Apple Pie Cocktail already suggests something homely, indulgent and familiar.

On the palate, the Apple Pie Cocktail is smooth and rounded. Fresh apple juice brings a crisp, juicy core, while Disaronno wraps it in soft notes of toasted almond, vanilla and a hint of caramelised sugar. Together they echo the flavour of baked apple and golden pastry, giving the drink the dessert-like character its name promises.

Orange curaçao adds depth and brightness through the mid-palate, with notes of candied orange peel and a gentle bittersweet edge that keeps the sweetness in check. A measured splash of fresh lemon juice sharpens the whole drink, lending a clean acidity that makes the Apple Pie Cocktail refreshing rather than heavy.

The finish is long, warm and gently spiced, with lingering almond, baked apple and citrus zest. Balanced, easy to enjoy and quietly indulgent, the Apple Pie Cocktail works beautifully as an after-dinner treat or a relaxed drink in the bar at Penventon Park Hotel.

The heart of the Apple Pie Cocktail is Disaronno, a liqueur with roots in the town of Saronno in northern Italy. According to the brand’s own legend, its story dates to 1525, when a Renaissance painter working on frescoes in Saronno was given a gift of a homemade liqueur by a local innkeeper who served as his model. Whether legend or history, the tale has become part of Disaronno’s identity.

The liqueur as known today was developed by the Reina family, who produced and sold it in Saronno from the early twentieth century. It was long sold under the name Amaretto di Saronno before being renamed Disaronno Originale in 2001, and it remains one of the most recognisable Italian liqueurs in the world, instantly identified by its square-shouldered bottle and distinctive cap.

Orange curaçao, the second spirit in the Apple Pie Cocktail, traces its origins to the Caribbean island of Curaçao. Spanish settlers planted Valencia orange trees there, but the arid climate turned the fruit bitter and inedible. Over time, it was discovered that the dried peel of these oranges, known as laraha, was intensely aromatic, and Dutch traders turned it into a liqueur. Bringing these two classic liqueurs together with apple and lemon, the Apple Pie Cocktail is a modern creation that draws on centuries of European and Caribbean tradition.
