Cornas

In the heart of France’s northern Rhone Valley, the Cornas appellation emerges as a storied wine region with a legacy that dates back to Roman times. Established as an AOC in 1938, Cornas is exclusively dedicated to robust, red wines made from the Syrah grape.

The name “Cornas” derives from the Celtic word for “burnt earth,” reflecting the sun-drenched, steep granite slopes where the vines are meticulously terraced. This small appellation, covering just 114 hectares, is protected from the harsh ‘le mistral’ winds, allowing it to be often the first in the north to begin harvest.

Cornas wines are known for their power and longevity, traditionally requiring years of aging to reveal their full potential. However, a modern, fruit-forward style has emerged, championed by winemakers like Jean-Luc Colombo. These wines still retain the classic Cornas character—dark, rich, and full-bodied, with ripe tannins and flavors of blackberry, spice, and mint.
