Condrieu
Tucked away in the northern reaches of France’s Rhone Valley, the Condrieu appellation is a hidden gem that has been producing wine since Roman times. This prestigious AOC, established in 1940, is exclusively dedicated to the white Viognier grape, which is believed to have originated in this very region.
The vineyards of Condrieu cling to steep slopes on the right bank of the Rhône River, across seven communes including Limony, Chavanay, Malleval, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, Saint-Pierre-de Boeuf, Vérin, and Condrieu itself. The soil here is predominantly gneiss, a metamorphic rock that imparts a unique minerality to the wines.
Condrieu’s wines are renowned for their aromatic intensity, with a bouquet that often includes notes of apricot, peaches, violets, and a hint of spice. The palate is equally enchanting, offering a silky texture and a balance between lush fruit and refreshing acidity. These wines can range from dry to sweet, with some producers also crafting rare late-harvest versions
